Probably 1940s printing. Stan Zielinski's excellent "Children's Picture Book Collecting" website contains an exhaustive analysis of the first edition points for this book showing that all states of the first edition have a color pictorial pastedown on the front cover. This feature was apparently abandoned in 1942 for the monochrome embossed illustration as on our copy.
