London's somnabulists are the complacent politicians, statesmen, intellectuals, captains of industry, etc., who dismiss the plight of the "lower classes" - sleepwalking through their unquestioned acceptance of an exploitive economic system. His essay is a scathing indictment of the status quo in the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. Collected in "Revolution and Other Essays" (Macmillan, 1910). Woodbridge #900.
