The first US printing of the story, published as "The Spring Running" in the UK a month earlier in the September 26, 1895 issue of The Pall Mall Gazette and the September & October issues of the Civil & Military Gazette. The story was published the same year in "The Second Jungle Book" (London: Macmillan & Co.; New York: The Century Co. (Livingston #117).
