First translation into English of the Figueroa manuscript of Fr. Francisco Palou's "Noticias de la Nueva California" the first general history of the founding of Alta California. Palou's account was written over a period of 10 years (1773-83) in Monterey and San Francisco. Palou had accompanied Fr. Junipero Serra first to Baja and then to Alta California, eventually succeeding Serra as president of the Missions. Minor spotting to covers. All volumes signed on front free endpaper by Herbert Bolton, 4th volume signed and dated October 8, 1935. Front fixed endpaper in each volume with ink ex-libris of Daniel A and Josephine L Ryan.
