Description

Original copperplate engraving, sheet size 31 x 35 cm, image size 18.5 x 29.5 cm. Depicts the Chinese city of Nanking in the distance with palm tree and human figures (one of whom is mounted on a horse) in the foreground.

Dutch traveler Jan Nieuhoff (1618-1672) was a member the Dutch East India Company, serving as steward on one of their embassies to China from 1655-57. In addition to writing the account of the mission, his sketches and drawings were the basis for the engravings illustrating his books.
