Considered one of the best descriptions of California and the Gold Rush. Revere (a grandson of Paul Revere) was an officer of the U.S.S. Portsmouth at the outbreak of the Mexican War. He came ashore at Monterey and headed north on horseback to take control of the garrison at Sonoma and himself raised the American flag on Sonoma's plaza. Earlier and later excursions on land took Revere throughout the state and his descriptions of the countryside and its inhabitants are well-written and compelling. He was also an accomplished artist - the plates are reproduced from his sketches. Revere eventually settled for a time north of San Francisco; owning the beautiful San Geronimo Valley in Marin County for a few years.
