The lengthy preface and introduction provide an annotated list of previous works on Irish travel, geography, history, etc., as well as detailed history of the island, and a brief gazetteer for the tourist. Sir Richard Colt Hoare (1758-1838) was an English antiquarian, traveller, artist, and amateur archaeologist. He authored several travel accounts, of which this is the first. His first publication was a translation from the Latin of 'The Historical Works of Geraldus Cambrensis."
