Comments

The manuscript leaf contains 6 lines in Muir's own hand from his original manuscript of "The Mountains of California: " . . . breaking. Then comes a belt of broad leafed sedges interrupted here & there by impenetrable tangles of tall willows. Beyond this rise groves of trembling aspens. Then a dark shadowy forest [excised] belt of the Two-leafed Pine, with here & there a round carex meadow ensconced . . ." (from Chapter VI; "The Glacier Lakes, Shadow Lake, p. 127, this edition). The "Manuscript Edition" was sold by subscription; the first 6 volumes were published in 1916, volumes 7 & 8 in 1918, volumes 9 in 1923, and volume 10 in 1924.
