Original red pictorial cloth with cover design stamped in black and yellow, quarto (8 x 10 inches); 260 pp. Profusely illustrated from photographs, maps, drawings. Accompanying the book is a 28-page pamphlet: "The Story of the Publication of 'Spearhead in the West' the Third Armored Division in World War II by Andrew Barr, WWII, A. C. of S. G-2." No publisher, place, or date, but circa 1975. Also laid in is the official shoulder patch of the Third Armored Division, with Spearhead slogan.
The Third Army Division (known as "The Third Herd") was activated in 1941, first saw combat in France in June, 1944, then was fully engaged during the Normandy invasion in July of the year. In September, 1944, the Division spearheaded the attack on German soil. After Germany's surrender, the Division remained as part of the occupation force until inactivation on Nov. 10, 1945.
