Comments

James Mason Hutchings (1820-1902) spent much of his life in and around Yosemite and the high Sierra and was instrumental in promoting Yosemite Valley as a tourist destination. His "In the Heart of the Sierras" was the crowning achievement of his career as a writer and publisher. The extra plate - "The Sierras from Glacier Point", a "photo-typo" by Britton and Rey after a photograph by George Fiske is found at page 470, opposite the correct plate "Key to the High Sierra from Glacier Point Hotel." Currey & Kruska 175; Farquhar 18d.
