Schaeffer spent 3 years in California, arriving in the summer of 1849 and the great majority of the book is devoted to California. He spent time in, and writes about, San Francisco, Stockton, Sacramento, Grass Valley, Downieville, and other gold rush towns. His account is considered both readable and reliable.
