Anthology represents more than 100 contributors, including H. H. Bancroft, Ina Coolbrith, Bret Harte, Charles Warren Stoddard, John C. Fremont, Leland Stanford, et al. This the copy of Dr. Enoch H. Pardee (1929-1896), Republican mayor of Oakland (1876-78), he also served in both the State Senate and House of Representatives. His son George Pardee was also an Oakland mayor (1893-95) before becoming California's first native-born governor in 1902. Signed in pencil on front free endpaper "E. H. Pardee, MD, Oakland California, 1880"
