Pardee (1929-1896), Republican mayor of Oakland (1876-78), he also served in both the State Senate and House of Representatives. His son George Pardee was also an Oakland mayor (1893-95) before becoming California's first native-born governor in 1902. Signed in pencil on front free endpaper "E. H.
