Cornelius Cole (1822-1924) came to California by the overland route, following the Humboldt River from Salt Lake City and over Carson Pass to Sutter's Fort. After some success in the gold fields, in 1850 he began the practice of law in San Francisco. He relocated to Sacramento shortly afterward and built a thriving practice that counted among its clients Mark Hopkins, the Crocker brothers, Collis Huntington, etc. He served in the US House of Representatives as Republican senator for California from 1863-65 and a term in the US Senate, 1867-1873. His memoir is a rich source of detailed information about life in California in the period of the Gold Rush and early statehood. Cowan p. 134; Graff 799; Kurutz 145; Rocq 8923.
