Galen Clark (1814 - 1910) was the Canadian-born naturalist and conservationist who was an early champion for the preservation of Yosemite. He is credited with being the first European to discover the Mariposa Grove of old-growth giant sequoias (1857) and he became a an important part of the movement to preserve the Yosemite. In 1864 when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant (giving the Yosemite valley and surrounding area to California for preservation and management) into law, Galen Clark was appointed the first "Guardian of the Grant." Clark wrote and published 4 books on Yosemite of which this is the first. Cowan p. 126.
