Compiled from letters to "certain Eastern journals - chiefly to the Cleveland "Leader & Herald" written during 1884 and 1886. The author was a fairly prolific writer of travel literature as well as juvenile fiction and short stories. The present text is intended as a "pleasant and readable book" that in some sense can function as a guide for visitors to the region. An expanded version was published the following year.
