John Muir's guide to the Yosemite was begun at the suggestion of Muir's friend Robert Underwood Johnson (to whom the book is dedicated), an editor at the Century Magazine. Together, Johnson and Muir were the driving forces behind the creation of Yosemite National Park in 1890.
