A close look at China at the beginning of the 20th century by American Presbyterian missionary, long-time China hand, interpreter and translator William Alexander Parsons Martin (1827 - 1916). Among his many notable achievements, in 1858 he worked as interpreter for US minister William B. Reed in negotiating the Treaty of Tientsin. In 1898 he was appointed inaugural president of the Imperial University of Peking by the Guangxu Emperor.
