The first translation into English of Dionysius' masterpiece of Roman history. The work originally numbered 20 books, of these the first 10 survive complete and the eleventh in a fragment. The entire extant text is translated here and presented in the divisions of the original Greek text. Edward Spelman's translation earned great praise for its accuracy and elegance and the erudition of his notes and stood as the only translation into English for more than a century. Supplementary to the primary work and placed following the second book of the Antiquities (pp. 369-456 at the end of Vol. I), Spelman appended his earlier (1743) publication "A Fragment Out of the Sixth Book of Polybius: Containing a Dissertation on Government in general, particularly applied to th that of the Romans . . . Translated from the Greek with Notes" (Greek text with English translation on facing pages) together with " . . . a Preface wherein the system of Polybius is applied to the Governement of England" and "a Dissertation upon the Constitution of (the Roman Senate)."
