Generally considered the rarest of London's novels, this periodical publication predates the book publication by 3 months. Quite scarce in this condition. The story is accompanied by illustrations by M.J. Burns. Sisson & Walker's entry for this title states that it is "Complete in St. Nicholas, v. 29" when in fact the beginning of the magazine version of the tale coincides with the opening of Chapter VIII in the published book. It would be more accurate to call this a digest version. (Woodbridge #10, Sisson & Walker #3).
