Quite scarce complete with map in original cloth. Besides the author's narrative of his own overland trek, the work contains the first published account of the Donner Party. An appendix of about 110 pages in the second volume "The Gold Regions of California" was prepared "While the first portion of this work was passing through the press . . ." in response to reports of the discovery of gold in California. The text includes accounts by Thomas O. Larkin and Walter Colton, et al, as well as practical information for the prospective argonaut. The J. H. Colton "Map of California, Oregon, Texas, and the Territories adjoining with routes, etc." depicts the region west of Independence, MO to the Pacific and from the northern border of the United States to Baja California, with the California gold region highlighted in yellow.
