Dard Hunter began his full-time career in the book arts and design in 1904 when he was taken on at Elbert Hubbard's Roycrofters artists' colony in East Aurora, NY. He had earlier worked at typesetting and graphic arts at his father's newspaper in Ohio. Hunter greatly influenced the design style of the Roycrofters before striking out on his own in 1910.
