Springfield, MA: Nirenstein's National Realty Map Co. n.d. (circa 1952). Original edition. Hardcover. Large folio (23 x18.25 inches), maroon leatherette cloth lettered in gilt, leather index tabs at fore-edges of leaves. 34 leaves (including large double-page 2-sided folding map of California at rear); text, maps and illustrations (from photographs) printed in blue-green ink throughout. Illustrations include many aerial views of city centers, shopping districts, etc. A few small ink stamps to title page (UCB Institute of Urban and Regional Development), but very good. Very good. Item #21513

Apparently a customizable publication, this volume includes all the Northern California cities called for under the Vol. XII heading on the title page (with 2 not on the list - Sunnyvale and Hilldale Shopping Center), but it does not have Honolulu, Hawaii, nor the 2 cities each in Utah and Nevada, and 3 in Colorado, which are also listed in the contents of Vol. XII. However several Southern California maps and views from Vol. XIII "South Pacific States Atlas, Vol. XIII" which is also described on the title page are included here. Namely: Atlantic Square Shopping Center (LA); Broadway-Crenshaw (LA); Lakewood Center (LA); Westchester (LA); and Norwalk Square (LA). An interesting compilation of data, images, and information concerning California retail centers in the mid-twentieth-century. No-doubt of great value to bankers, developers, and urban planners at the time and today providing a unique window into the past - and how we got to where we are today. Publisher's price in 1952 was $295.
