The first printing, numbering 2028 copies, was on March 21, 1900. The second printing was not issued until July 13, followed by a third printing on September 25. London’s publishers did not follow their usual practice of removing the date from the title page for the first two reprints of this title (until the fourth and subsequent printings) resulting in some confusion regarding the identification of the true first printing. Jacob Blanck in the “Bibliography of American Literature” (BAL) clearly identified the salient points in 1969; an earlier reference “Jack London: A Bibliography” by Hensley Woodbridge, et al, made some statements in error regarding this title, which still persist. This copy with first printing collation per BAL, and with tipped-in (not sewn) frontispiece, as well as the misplaced comma following the year, 1900, on copyright page (corrected with a period on subsequent printings). These 2 points are found only on BAL first printing collation. (BAL 11869, Sisson & Martens page 2).
