A true account of life in the poorhouse with no literary or poetic aspirations whatsover, judging by Theodore Dreiser's strangely ambivalent introduction. Dreiser says: ". . . the author does somehow infuse into this narrative the glow of reality - the strangeness of a world one has never penetrated, yet which can no longer be wholly strange once one has read this. Art? No. A great book? No. Yet a very exceptional one."
