Originally published in The Century Magazine for December 1890 and February 1891. In 1848 Bidwell made a fortune in the gold rush, the following year he bought 26000 acres of the upper Sacramento Valley-naming his property Rancho Chico, in 1860 he laid out the town of Chico. Bidwell died in 1900.
