The prolific novelist, essayist, and poet Helen Hunt Jackson (1830-1885) is now best remembered for her romantic novel "Ramona" which she wrote and published 3 years after her scathing exposé - "A Century of Dishonor" - of the US government's mistreatment of American Indians. "Ramona" was intended to to do for the cause of Indian rights what her friend Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Uncle Tom's Cabin" had accomplished for the cause of abolition.
