Inscribed and signed on front free endpaper by Lincoln Steffens: "To Geo. A. Connolly with the compliments of Lincoln Steffens, Overland Limited, 201 (?) Aug. 9, 1910." San Francisco-born Lincoln Steffens (1866-1936) was a journalist, editor, and social reformer. Following a trip to the Soviet Union in 1919 he became for a time an apologist for the Communist revolution. "I have seen the future, and it works," he famously declared in support of the Soviet government.
