An important work by the famed mining engineer. Sutro was seeking financial support from the federal government in his scheme to drive a six-mile tunnel into Mount Davidson from Carson River to the Comstock Lode to improve the efficiency of access and transportation to and from the mines. Largely through private financing, the tunnel was completed in 1878 and became immediately profitable. Sutro sold his interest the following year.
